Corporate backgrounder

Tandberg Data is a leading global supplier and manufacturer of backup and archiving solutions, based on the RDX®, SLR™, VXA® and LTO™ technology platforms. The company offers secondary storage products based on tape drives, autoloaders, libraries, media, disk-based solutions, software and hardware components for mainstream configurations.

In November 2006, Tandberg Data acquired Exabyte Corporation. With the acquisition, Tandberg Data has doubled its size and stepped up among the major technology companies listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. The combined product portfolios of the two companies will provide customers with the full range of state-of-the-art, cost effective products and technologies to meet their needs, including Exabyte's VXA packet technology.

Tandberg products are supported by all major operating systems and software applications to successfully operate in heterogeneous network information storage environments. All solutions are designed to meet the growing storage requirements of small and medium sized organizations with scalability, reliability and backward compatibility features that ensure cost effective operation and long-term investment protection.

In addition to corporate offices and manufacturing facilities in Oslo, Norway, Tandberg Data has subsidiaries in USA, France, Germany, Norway, Singapore and Japan, as well as affiliate offices in India and China (PRC).

From entry level to SME
Rapidly growing capacity requirements and the increasing importance of electronic information have led the world-wide enterprise, Tandberg Data, from tape-oriented to storage-oriented thinking.

Storage solutions coming from Tandberg Data are tailored to different needs. SLR systems assume data protection solutions in the entry level range. Scalable automation products and drives on DLT, LTO and VXA platforms have been developed for midrange and high-end environments.

All systems are equipped with intelligent management software providing information about quality of the data and the time it was stored. Tandberg Data?s disk storage, like the recently introduced RDX QuikStor, warrant highest data availability and reliability. Media labelled with Tandberg Data complete the product range. Tandberg data is constantly striving to offer customers more than they expect since to us customer satisfaction is king.

History
Tradition and innovation; this unbeatable mixture is the basis for the success of Tandberg Data. For more than 30 years, the company - as the only manufacturer in Europe - has been pursuing the further development and optimisation of data protection on tape and disk.

Since 1982, Tandberg Data has been producing streamers based on linear recording, the precursor of today's SLR technology. After that, it has also introduced tape drives based on the DLT, LTO and VXA technology, and it has added disk based backup to its portfolio of products. With this continuous growing range of products, Tandberg Data meets all standards regarding quality, compatibility and reliability of data storage. Since 1970, the name Tandberg Data has been a byword for reliable data protection and innovative storage solutions. In 1933, the company founder Vebjørn Tandberg founded the Tandberg radio factory. Now as before, the company culture - which is still focusing on its employees - stands for challenge, creativity and confidence.

The Future of Tape
Over the past 30 years, the decline of tape storage has been predicted countless times as new technologies have emerged for data backup applications. But each time, innovators in the tape storage industry have responded by developing and introducing technological advances that:

  • Significantly increase the capacity and performance of tape storage products,
  • Dramatically reduce the price of storage on tape compared to other media, and
  • Allow customers to store data and comply with stringent legal requirements (WORM).

As a result of these innovations, tape has been extraordinarily resilient in surviving these challenges and remains the value-oriented IT managers' first choice for data backup and archiving. In fact, industry analysts are predicting significant growth in the number of tape storage units shipped in the next five years, including double-digit growth in the number of tape automation products purchased during that timeframe. In addition to tape, disk continues to play a more prominent role in backup and recovery strategies ? also in small to medium enterprises. The fast access times, reduced backup windows and easy recovery makes it the backup and recovery medium of choice, whilst tape continues to provide long term archival, unmatched price-performance and removability.
