Special Considerations for Partitioning Cartridges on Windows
(KB # 1D393A73)

RDX cartridges are shipped from the factory pre-partitioned and pre-formatted. Cartridges less than 2TB in size contain a single MBR partition with an NTFS file system. Cartridges greater than 2TB in size contain a single GPT partition with an NTFS file system.

Most customers will not need to modify the factory partition or file system on the cartridge. However, if you do need to modify partition data you need to consider the operational mode your RDX device(s) will be running in. Currently the RDX USB3 device is capable of operation in either Removable Disk Mode or Fixed Disk Mode. It is recommended that you choose one operating mode (Removable Disk Mode or Fixed Disk Mode) and keep the device in that mode. Windows only supports single partitions for Removable Disk Mode devices.

Please see KB article Using Fixed Disk Mode on RDX QuikStor USB3 Docks for more information.

The factory default partition and file system is compatible with both Removable Disk Mode and Fixed Disk Mode.

When partitioning or formatting cartridges while running in Fixed Disk Mode, it is possible to create cartridges that are incompatible with RDX docks running in Removable Disk Mode. The most common incompatibility is creating a cartridge that has more than one partition. This occurs implicitly when using GPT partitions in Fixed Disk Mode. In this case even though you attempt to create a single partition Windows creates two partitions: A reserved area partition and the expected GPT partition. The newly partitioned and formatted cartridge is now incompatible when placed into an RDX dock running in Removable Disk Mode.

If you suspect that you've created an incompatibility between Removable Disk Mode and Fixed Disk Mode, you can use RDX Utility to view the device mode. You may need to change your device mode to Fixed Disk Mode to access previously written data.

If you want to switch to Removable Disk Mode from Fixed Disk Mode you should check data access on any cartridges that you partitioned or formatted while in Fixed Disk Mode.

To recreate the standard cartridge partition and format:
device MUST be in Removable Disk Mode
open an Administrator command shell
All data on the cartridge will be permanently lost
