Company History

70 Years of Manufacturing Excellence

Tandberg Data has a legacy of manufacturing excellence and innovation dating back to the Tandberg Radio Factory founded in 1933. This legacy has fostered a culture of engineering innovation leading to Tandberg Data's breakthrough in magnetic recording technology and in particular the development of the Tandberg SLR - Scalable Linear Recording - tape storage product platform.

Tandberg Data was established in 1979 as a separate data division when the Tandberg Radio Factory was dissolved into separate entities. At this same time, several other organizations carrying the Tandberg name were established, each pursuing different business opportunities.

Throughout the 1980's Tandberg Data introduced several information storage products based on the QIC (Quarter Inch Cartridge) standard, these included products ranging from 20MB in 1980 to 1GB in 1989. During this same period the organization also developed a significant business in the area of data terminals. However, tape information storage products contributed the greatest portion of earnings by 1987. Tandberg Data also established subsidiary locations in Germany, France and USA during the 1980's.

In the 1990's the company expanded its worldwide presence by establishing subsidiary locations in Japan, Singapore and the UK. Also during this time, the company incorporated LCD video projectors into their product portfolio. This diversification ended in 1996 when Tandberg Data shifted to 100% focus on information storage products.

In October 2003 Tandberg Data demerged, splitting out its core tape development group into a seperate public listed company; Tandberg Storage ASA (ticker= TST). As part of the demerger, O-Mass AS has become a subsidiary of Tandberg Storage. Tandberg Data holds a 19.9% equity stake in Tandberg Storage.
