Tandberg Data launches StorageLibrary T40 LTO-4
LTO-4 boosts compressed performance to 1.73 TB/Hr, capacities up to 64 TB and adds enterprise features
June 20, 2007: Tandberg Data (OSE: TAD), a leading global supplier of backup and archiving technologies, today announced the availability of the LTO-4 drive in its StorageLibrary T40. The StorageLibrary T40 is a mid-range tape library that delivers the affordability and simplicity of entry level tape automation, but is packed with the advanced features and scalability of an enterprise-class library. An ideal solution for unattended workgroup backup and archiving, the StorageLibrary supports both SCSI and Fibre Channel connectivity and now provides compressed capacity of up to 64TB in a compact 4U rack optimized form factor, to deliver superior storage density.
Developed specifically for data-intense SMBs, departmental organizations and mid-range enterprises, the Tandberg StorageLibrary T40 with a single LTO-4 drive and 40-cartridge magazine delivers speeds of 120 MB/s or 432 GB/hr (native) and total capacity of up to 32 TB native in a 4U rackmount enclosure. The StorageLibrary T40 eliminates the need for and associated costs of a SCSI or Fibre Channel controller by using a feature built into the LTO tape drives called Automation/Drive Interface (ADI).
"Medium sized businesses with budget constraints should not have to sacrifice features and functionality needed to adequately protect their data," commented Patrick Clarke, Executive vice president of global sales, marketing and service. "The StorageLibrary T40 has been designed with advanced features such as scalability, partitioning, remote management and notification. Integrating the LTO-4 drive in this library allows customers to keep up with expanding data capacity requirements."
Features and Benefits of the StorageLibrary T40
The Tandberg StorageLibrary T40 is a scalable, affordable, and user-friendly tape library. It easily scales "on demand" from a 1x24 to a 2x40 tape library with up to two full-height LTO-3 or LTO-4 drives. With two LTO-4 drives, the library offers up to 64 TB of compressed data storage and compressed speeds of 1.73 TB/Hr - all in a space-saving 4U form factor. The StorageLibrary T40 offers pay-as-you-go scalability - "Capacity on Demand" by offering an easy upgrade path from previous LTO-3 libraries to LTO-4, providing SMBs, departmental users, and mid-range enterprises the flexibility to easily adjust storage capacity based on budget and data requirements.
Reliability and manageability
In addition to high capacity, performance and flexibility, the StorageLibrary T40 hosts a range of enterprise class features that offer users full control of their library. Partitioning allows multiple servers to use one library whilst maintaining control of its allocated resources. Using the browser based remote management interface, administrators can remotely monitor, control, configure and diagnose the Tandberg StorageLibrary T40 via the Internet from anywhere in the world. Through the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), the library is continuously monitored and will provide information of any error situation to its host. Surveillance systems continuously monitor system temperature and fan fault detection is enabled. Email notification will allow the StorageLibrary T40 to automatically send an email notification to any specific address if something is wrong with the library.
Tandberg LTO-4
The new LTO-4 drive also offers a myriad of features to improve performance, reliability and manageability. With its new hardware-based encryption, the LTO-4 drive can write encrypted data directly to the LTO Ultrium tape cartridge, adding another level of security to the storage and transport of sensitive information. Digital Speed Matching, a 256 MB buffer and Dynamic Compression all improve drive performance. Diagnostic routines, such as the Statistical Analysis and Reporting System, assist in isolating failures between media and hardware, and Adaptive Tape Threading protects against failures during cartridge loads by verifying tape speed, the tape spinning wheel, and modulating the tape thread by providing tension control. Independent tape loader and threader motors and positive pin retention ensure that the pin will be retained during a miss-pick. Graceful Dynamic Braking allows the reel motors to gradually decelerate, instead of stopping abruptly during an unexpected power down.
The Tandberg LTO-3 and LTO-4 drives support WORM (Write Once, Read Many). WORM-functionality will help users to meet regulatory compliance requirements. Government regulations such as SEC and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act have established guidelines on how long data should be retained, kept secure and remain unaltered. Adding WORM functionality to the StorageLibrary T40 will offer users cost effective, long term archiving, allowing them to storage unaltered data for decades.
Availability and pricing
The new StorageLibrary LTO-4 is now available through Tandberg Data's established channel of distribution and reseller partners. The library ships with a copy of Symantec Backup Exec QS software, barcode reader, remote management, cables, rack-mount kit and is protected by a standard three-year RTF warranty and one-year Advanced Replacement Service (component level only). Optional on-site services, installation and warranty extensions are available from Tandberg Data. The manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the StorageLibrary T40 with 24 slots start at €6.105 and the MSRP of a StorageLibrary T40 with 40 slots and one LTO-4 drive is €10.870.
