Using RDX in Virtual Environments

Virtual environments are growing in the SMB market. About 72% of SMBs have already implemented server virtualization* and this number is consistently growing. The role of backup and disaster recovery becomes more important as physical servers and storage are consolidated.

Flexible solutions for VMware and Hyper-V

The RDX family of removable disk systems fits perfectly in various virtual environments.  RDX provides a high-performance solution for all storage tasks requiring removability and off-site storage or compliance backup and archiving tasks. Smaller SMBs and single-server solutions benefit from the affordable and easy to use RDX QuikStor devices, which are available as internal drives with USB 3.0 or SATA III interfaces as well as an external drive with USB 3.0 interface. The RDX QuikStation removable disk appliances are ideal for midrange environments with multiple virtual machines, which need their own devices for individual storage applications. RDX QuikStation simply integrates into existing networks via iSCSI.

Hyper-V Server Connectivity

SATA III internal drives and USB drives can be connected directly into a Hyper-V server to provide a complete solution including backup capabilities with hardware encryption to a removable storage media. The RDX drive is then used as a central backup repository for the backup software running on the Hyper-V host. Depending on the backup software utilized, either individual VMs or all VMs can be backed up to RDX.

Individual VM connectivity with USB device server

Allocating local attached removable storage to Hyper-V virtual machines is practically impossible. Because of this, users refrain from implementing this solution and many customers rely on network attached storage for backup. The validated combination of RDX QuikStor USB drives and the USB device server, provide fast, easy and cost-efficient deployment in your existing ethernet network. The USB device server converts the USB protocol into the ethernet network protocol, so the RDX drive can be accessed by individual Hyper-V VMs.




RDX QuikStor VMware deployment

VMware allows passing through SATA and USB ports from the ESXi host to a guest machine, which can utilise RDX SATA III or USB 3.0 drives for individual storage applications. If using a controller with multiple ports, VMware is able to share the ports among multiple VMs utilising individual RDX QuikStor drives.





RDX QuikStation - The perfect fit for virtual midrange environments

VMware and Hyper-V installations benefit from the seamless integration into existing networks. Through iSCSI, one or more RDX drives can be assigned to each VM.  For larger backup sets, RDX volumes can be consolidated to a logical volume, which provides  up to 40TB of removable storage depending on the QuikStation model, as well as unlimited off-line/site storage capacity.
